Ulterran is a short visual experimentation that follows two women through a pagan ritual to connect to the versions of themselves that exist in another spiritual dimension.

Tiger Balm

Trojan Horse/Rainbow Flag

An art film about the campaign to save the Joiners Arms, the iconic queer pub in East London. Working directly with members of ‘Friends of the Joiner’s Arms’ and queer actors based in East London, Giles employed participatory workshops and verbatim theatre as structures to produce a discursive social network and the resulting film. The film mixes transcribed scripted dialogue with interjections and commentary from the group.

Shot Reverse Shot

An experimental installation inspired by the shot and reverse shot, one of the basics methodologies of cinema. The audiences follow the path designed by Jang to see the images, and simultaneously they are also recorded by a hidden camera in the reverse angle. This embodies the concept “gaze of gaze.” The film was shot in three different places to capture the atmosphere of DMZ. The installation consists of two-channel projections, CCTV cameras, and objects representing the DMZ.

Frida Kahlo & Tina Modotti

An unconventional portrait of painter Frida Kahlo and photographer Tina Modotti. Simple in style but complex in its analysis, it explores the divergent themes and styles of two contemporary and radical women artists working in the upheaval of the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution.

Bloed

Elles Kiers and Sjef Meijman lived intensively with four Bunte Bentheimer pigs for seven months. During the slaughter month they had their beloved pig Bom killed and then prepared it themselves. The short documentary Blood (Dinanda Luttikhedde, 2011) follows the visual artists in the final phase of their research project into the origin of our food. A valuable ritual unfolds around the processing of this animal.

Persian Series #5

Dark blood red slow shifting tones (often embedded in dark) / (often shot-thru with parallel wave-like lines) composed of all previous shapes and flowers as if trying, linearly, to evolve a glyph-script. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2013.

Berlin Horse

Two fragments of 8mm home-movie footage shot by the artist near Berlin weave together in repeating cycles of action, temporal manipulation, and colour distortion, heightening the viewer’s awareness of film-time and the film-image, and perception of colour in motion.

Hisser

The story told in Hisser was inspired by a true occurrence. In 2013, a young man in Florida was literally "swallowed up by the earth" when a cesspool suddenly opened up under his bedroom. The film's main setting is a bedroom by night. From the way it was shot, the viewer has the feeling of peering into an abandoned life-size dollhouse. Other sequences show close-up views of a young man lying on a bed with a tormented look on his face or cowering in a corner. The scene is accompanied by an exaggeratedly romantic song whose refrain – "It took me so long to get my feet back off the ground" – alludes to the loss of a loved one and a sense of abysmal loneliness. The song's emotionality contrasts starkly with the artificiality of the scene. The boundary between reproduction and reality grows fluid, and the virtuality – which the artist has carried to a near- perfect extreme – begins to crumble in view of the protagonist's physical and emotional frailty.
