There was a time in Argentina, not so long ago, when the army wasn't only one, official, but many and made up by civilians. In those times of courageous youths determined to fight to the death for that cause upheld around Peronism as wll as some left-wing postulates, revolutionary Cubas was a beacon of hope in the world scheme -a Montonero nation. "A House in Cuba" seeks to recover the curious adventure of a couple of Montonero parents and their small children, who were lovingly sent into exile in order for their parents to take up arms.

Markus Lanz: Kuba!
Cuba is currently not the focus of global attention; there are other crisis hotspots. However, the country is in deep trouble. Even the most basic items, like toilet paper, are sometimes impossible to find across the entire island. Many Cubans say that without the good Caribbean weather, socialism would have ended long ago. But what comes after communism under the palm trees? It’s not just about material things. It’s also about the mistrust that has deeply embedded itself in society. Anyone could be an informer and send their neighbors, their friends to prison. When I asked a priest in Santiago de Cuba if he had ever been imprisoned for his Christian beliefs, he replied: “Not in a prison with barred windows, but believe me, there are many kinds of prisons…”

Rethinking Cuban Civil Society
The notion of a Cuban civil society is often misrepresented in the U.S. mainstream media. According to most sources, Cuban civil society is limited to the opposition, which has little impact on the Cuban political scenario. Regardless, yearly, the U.S. government allocates tens of millions of taxpayer money to empower dissidents in the island. By doing so, it overlooks genuine expressions of pluralism, reform and contestation which are shaping the Cuban public sphere, sometimes in autonomous ways, sometimes within State-run institutions. Through in-depth interviews to members of Cuban Civil society, this documentary explores the complexities associated to these processes, following the itinerary of the debate about the concept of civil society generated in Cuba, since the 90s to the present.
